South Girls roll to victory, North Boys score late for equalizer
ANDERSON, SC - The annual North-South Soccer Classic was held Saturday at Anderson University's Spero Financial Field at Melvin & Dollie Younts Stadium. This marked the ninth consecutive year that the "Electric City" has served as hosts of this event - the Palmetto State's oldest high school all-star game was not staged in 2020 due to Covid.
It was a hot day in the Upstate and both matches were impacted by the heat as the Girls game was shortened to 70 minutes while the Boys contest was limited to a 60 minute affair. In the 29th meeting for the Girls, the South squad was victorious with a 3-0 decision for their third win in the last four meetings which includes a draw and now leads the overall series 13-10-6. In the 37th iteration of the Boys match, the North tallied a last minute score to earn a 1-1 tie to move their series mark to 19-14-4. The Girls event began in 1997 at Greer, S.C., and the Boys started their occurrence in 1989 at Mount Pleasant.
GIRLS: North 0-3 SouthMadeline Moye of Academic Magnet got things started for the South on the half-hour mark when she took a pass from Cane Bay's Eiliyah Tomes and ripped a shot from 30 yards into the upper right corner of the net to give the South a 1-0 lead at intermission. In the second stanza, the South continued to control the match and tallied a pair of goals by Omi Griffin of James Island Charter on 57 minutes and Emily Lorenzo of Waccamaw at the 68-minute mark. Twin sisters Vanessa Coleman and Victoria Coleman of Gray Collegiate were credited with assists on both scores, respectively. Summerville's Addison Rollison played all 70 minutes between the pipes for the South squad and registered two saves on seven shots by the North team.

Except for the final 10 minutes, the South team had outplayed their Upstate counterparts and held a 14-8 advantage on shots for the contest, including an 8-2 advantage in the second half. Jason Green-Adams of Waccamaw earned a penalty kick just after a first-half hydration break at the 15-minute mark when he was fouled by North netminder, William Ossman of Christ Church Episcopal. The spot-kick was awarded after a flurry at the six-yard box where Osmman had turned away two previous attempts but knocked Green-Adams down and he connected on the PK.
