Area Trio Joins Forces to Trounce North Girls

MOUNT PLEASANT -- They were opponents during their high school soccer careers, battling for the Region 7-AAAA and state titles. But on Saturday, James Island's Lisa Frawley, West Ashley's Julie Bolt and Wando's Hannah Niepp united for a common cause during the CESA North-South Soccer Classic.

They were members of the South girls' all-star team, and each had big roles in their team's 5-1 victory over the North at the College of Charleston's soccer stadium at Patriots Point. Frawley scored the first two goals of the match, including one on a header that was set up on an assist from Niepp. Bolt, who was a co-captain for the South, also scored two goals and was credited with an assist. Bolt set up Holly Mauldin's goal, the South's final of the match at the 77:46 mark. Mauldin, who played for Irmo, was the South's other captain and began the game as the South's goalkeeper.

The North's only goal came with just 93 seconds left in the match when Woodruff's Casey Cash scored from the top of the box.

Frawley will attend the University of South Carolina, but will not play competitive soccer. She fared well in the final match of her career with a goal at the 7:39 mark, while the other came at the 28:20 mark.

"You play for pride," Frawley said of the all-star game. "It's an invitational, so not everyone gets the chance. I'll play soccer for fun in college, so today was a little hard because it was my last game. But I'll get to see some of my teammates play at South Carolina, and that will be fun."

Bolt, who will play for the Clemson Tigers, scored her goals in an 86-second span in the second half. She said she had fun playing in the exhibition, and was happy to come away with the victory.

"They tell us to have fun, but there's always that whisper that we have to beat the North. We've won the last few years, and wanted to keep that going."

The South took a 5-4-2 lead in the series, gaining its fourth win it the last five matches.

Bolt helped West Ashley win the Class AAAA state title in May. It marked the fourth straight year that a team from Region 7-AAAA won the title. West Ashley also won titles in 2002 and '03, while Wando won it in '04.

"I think a lot of the Lowcountry's success branches off the Charleston United Fusion," Bolt said of her club. "A lot of girls who played today are on that team."

South Boys Shut Down North in Soccer Classic

MOUNT PLEASANT -- The South's slump is over.

Spring Valley's Chase Rowell scored two goals Saturday afternoon to lead the South boys' team to a 3-0 victory in the CESA North-South Soccer Classic at the College of Charleston's soccer stadium at Patriots Point. The North had dominated the series, with a 7-0-1 mark in the last eight matches. But Rowell, who will play for Hampden-Sydney College, provided the offense for the South, which won for the first time since 1996. The North leads the series 10-5-2.

"Yeah, I was aware of it," Rowell said of the South's recent skid. "They were talking about it before the match. You definitely want to win because this is your last time to play high school soccer. We wanted to prove the South is a good team. The last couple of years, the game was a blowout."

The North won 5-1 in 2003 and followed that with a 4-1 decision last June. But on this day, the match belonged to Rowell, who provided the offensive punch.

Rowell played for Spring Valley, which suffered a 1-0 loss to Wando in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs more than a month ago.

"It was tough. I got subbed out six times," said Rowell, who was not in the starting lineup. "The stamina was not there today."

Rowell scored from 26 yards at the 24:39 mark and from eight yards and an assist from Chapin's Justin Widener at the 55:16 mark. Sumter's Brian Przybyla scored the final goal of the match, with just 1.2 seconds left in regulation.

FWIW I've been involved with youth, club and HS soccer in SC for 20 years however this was my 1st opportunity to see a NS event.

I think the whole event should thank those who refused to let it die for lack of Home Depot being involved. Clearly their efforts should be acknowleged.

I thought it was extremely well done and the level of play was great. The pace in the boys game for the weather and heat was amazing.

No question the bar is high for the upstate next year. Hopefully somehow Furman will add some bathrooms to Stone Stadium and be hosting. USCS would be a great venue as well.

Yes, great event. Good job to those that saved the all-star game this year and put on these great games. I hate that the games are moving out of Charleston, but hopefully the South will continue this year's dominance!
